PTC Validates Cloud for Engineers
The CAD industry is in the early stages of cloud development, and any new technology is bound to have its detractors. But the cloud is proving to be just the solution many forward-thinking companies are looking for when faced with growth outpacing their ability to produce.
We love CAD. Anyone who has drafted using a pencil and paper, compass and calculator knows that Computer Aided Design allows for quicker, more accurate, and graphically rich designing that takes most of the guess-work out of creating. We here at EpiGrid also love “the cloud”. If you’re not sure what “the cloud” is, think of it as digital storage space that doesn’t require a hard drive or a server on site to access. “The cloud” is also a secure connection to your data, so even though it’s not being stored locally, you can still be sure that your data is safe. And now with 4G cellular data transfer speeds, “the cloud” lets you access your data from anywhere with any device.
The CAD industry is in the early stages of cloud development, and any new technology is bound to have its detractors. But the cloud is proving to be just the solution many forward-thinking companies are looking for when faced with growth outpacing their ability to produce. The cloud’s scalability is its best asset, which allows businesses to grow with demand, instead of reacting to it.
One leading CAD software has made adopting the cloud for data and lifecycle management incredibly easy and impressively safe and secure. With this software, a company’s entire catalog of CAD files and drawings are stored on the cloud. The CAD users just log into their vault through a secure VPN and have access to that company’s files, with pertinent information about revisions, design input, and who was involved with the design.
We’ve been preaching the benefits of a cloud hosted PDM or PLM system for years, and it is gratifying to see one of the industry big boys, PTC Creo jump on board, and here’s what Al Dean, Editor-in-Chief of DEVELOP3D Magazine has to say about cloud based solutions:
“By centralizing data and workflow in a single place that’s easily accessible (easily is key here), we stand to make life more efficient for all involved. Yes, the cloud, in the engineering world, is perhaps a little behind other industries. The data we’re dealing with is heavier (There’s a world of difference between a salesforce.com customer record and a 10,000 part 3D assembly) and security is, for many, still an issue.”
This whole article is an interesting read, and can be accessed here. For every point made in this article, EpiGrid already has a solution to address that specific concern.
“There’s some heavy demands in terms of building the infrastructure on which to deploy it, consultancy is an ever present factor as well.”
Our hosted infrastructure is already in place, and we’ve been providing hosted solutions for PDM and PLM for over two years now, with full consultancy for all of our customers.
“I’m sure we’ve all heard stories of $100,000s if not millions being spent on PLM implementations that have been less than successful.”
How does $789 a month sound? This one cost includes, dedicated hosted server and network, managed IT services, 24/7 server monitoring, Implementation, training and ongoing monthly CAD and Admin support. EpiGrid currently offers this solution for SolidWorks EPDM, Workgroup and will offer this solution for the recently announced PDM Standard coming later this year. That’s everything your company needs to ensure that your data management system will be able to scale right along with your growth.
PTC Creo’s Windchill points directly toward the future of business collaboration for designers and engineers. Our hosted solution is the only option available that offers SolidWorks users a fully hosted, cloud-based data management alternative to the standard (and very limiting) on-site approach. While SolidWorks plays catch-up, EpiGrid offers a solution that is ready out-of-the-box to connect you to the most recent version of your data from anywhere in North America. Contact us today to find out more about how EpiGrid can help you migrate all of your data to a fully secure and hosted vault at a surprisingly affordable price.
